If you have arrived here you are curious about how to capture a stunning 1920's vintage wedding for you upcoming date. Being my favourite decade, I really love bringing back elements from the roaring 20's. One of the reasons why I love channeling the 1920's style in my jewelry is the powerful mark it left on fashion. The 1920's marked the first time in history when fashion left the restrictive role it had over people for so long. People were open to trying more comfortable and exciting things on. With the sudden popularity of jazz and the rise of the women's rights movement, society was leaving many archaic traditions behind. Men and women were finding new ways to define themselves. The result was an explosion of potential in what could be expressed through what they wore. This can be seen as a pivotal point when women began showing more independence and individuality.

I think brides still gravitate to the vintage 1920's style because you can look free-spirited, fun, and classic. I think all of us ladies owe a great deal to those pioneering flappers. Their courage to innovate has left such a beautiful mark on fashion. This shoot captures the beautiful marriage between the classic 1920's and some elegant modern elements. This helps show brides how they can achieve a look that is both low-fuss and elegant. Rather than the 'roar' of the 20's, this look channels a more elegant echo from such a classic era.

Hi friendlies, it's been awhile... August 23 2017

BEING VULNERABLE THIS SUMMER

Gosh, I can't believe it's been since June since I've last chatted with you! I've missed you! How have you been? How's your rainy summer been? Kind of feels like we've just had an extended spring right!? At least here in Southern Ontario it feels that way. I'm not gonna lie, I'm sitting here in my long johns and sweat pants since the wind is howling outside my living room door. The outdoor lawn furniture is getting flipped upside down and the trees are bent over so far I fear they might break! Kind of how I feel like my life has flipped upside down this summer. So here's a little bit of a long post, more of a story telling time. Everyone loves a good story right? I hope you'll bear with me as I talk about vulnerability, the future of Hattitude, my other business and the mentorship program Tristan and I entered into this summer, as well as my living situation, and why camping gave me back my independence and confidence.

LIVING IN BARRIE FOR THE SUMMER

We've been living in Barrie and drinking coffee from the local coffee shop and working at the Creative space a shared co-working space for start ups, free lancers, and entrepreneurs. It's a crazy awesome environment. You can work for yourself, just not by yourself. Pretty genius idea and I'm in love with how much more work, way more productive, I get done at the creative space, then I do at home. I'm so incredibly happy we won the contest and get to work there for the next 6 months at our own desk!

MOST CHALLENGING SUMMER

This summer has been one of the most challenging but also rewarding summer of my life! My husband and I embarked on a 6 month mentorship to start up our business. We're designing a platform that connects social sports leagues (beer leagues) who need substitute players to fill in for their roster. People who are looking to meet people, people who are moving to a new city can now be a substitute player for other teams without the commitment. We want to encourage less screen time and more real life connections in person, AKA more people time.

STARTING A NEW BIZ IS HARD!!!

We've met with a lot of mentors and people to help facilitate and get our biz up off the ground. It has been such a learning experience and sometimes I feel like we are over our head. A lot of the time I feel overwhelmed and most of the time I'm super scared! Starting a new biz is HARD! Starting a new biz in the tech world (not the wedding or fashion industry, something I am used to is even harder!) I have been loving the challenge though. 

A NEW CHALLENGE FOR MY MARKETING SKILLS

This has been exactly what I have been craving, a new challenge to hone my marketing skills. A new challenge to put to the test on how we can do it. But boy, are we being tested, between the commute, the almost none existent money, the grocery bills, the gas tank always needing to be topped up, everything has been all consuming and overwhelming. I've definitely felt down, sad, over worked, and under paid... well no pay. We keep our eye on the prize though.

72% OF BUSINESSES FAIL BECAUSE

We are so lucky to have my parents and friends support, and the mentors through this program. Every time I feel down you better believe I'm SO grateful for everyone. I don't know how people start up a business without mentors. I read that 72% of businesses fail because they didn't write a business plan or have mentors. I believe it! Starting a biz without support would be darn near impossible. 

WE ARE LIVING THIS SUMMER

We've been living in a 600 sq ft cottage with two dogs, a cat, my two parents, guests and siblings coming and going, and living out of a suit case commuting back and forth to Caledon two days a week... let's just say privacy is something I don't quite remember anymore! haha

It also hasn't helped that the summer weather has been rainy. TOO rainy. To say it's been challenging would be an understatement. We are really looking forward to the cold weather when we move back to Caledon full time to our own apartment. I didn't realize how important privacy and space was until this summer! ha 

WE WENT CAMPING TO GET AWAY

To get away from the cramped living quarters, the office space, the lap top screens, the computer monitors, we thought what is the most economical trip we can take this summer so we feel like we are still living life and not ALWAYS working. My husband immediately says "Let's go camping". Lets get off our screens, unplug, disconnect and go back woods camping. My response... "but I'm diabetic, had a double lung transplant and have cystic fibrosis, not to mention I'm a self diagnosed hypochondriac, neurotic, planner type of person." haha God love him, his response, "We got this Hattie. We can do anything. We'll plan it."

PORTAGING IN THE BACK WOODS COUNTRY OF CANADA

SO we did. I actually went on a back woods portage camping trip. It brings little tears to my eyes thinking about how good it felt to accomplish it. Hours of paddling from the launch spot, then portaging to another private lake and paddling for another hour, then finally landing at our island. No cell phone service. 6 hours north of toronto, with another 5 hours of paddling. NOTHING was around. And you know what, for a girl who has an addiction to social media, technology and everything on the net, I freaking loved being unplugged. It was so relaxing and rewarding. I loved working that hard for my food over the camp fire and washing the dishes in the lake before the sun set, and making sure the bear hang was up in the tree before night fall (one night it didn't get up in time and what a time that was! I'll save that story for my camping blog post). Boy did that pizza the first night after paddling taste good over the fire! You better believe that hot tea the next morning never smelt so good too.

I LOVED BEING UNPLUGGED FOR 5 DAYS

We came back refreshed from a hard few months of start up life. Ready to regroup and retackle our other business (@subit.sports) and give Hattitude a fresh look on where I want to take her. I think what made me feel so empowered when I went camping is the same reason why I've been working out 3-4 times a week this summer, because despite all the unknowns in my life right now or the lack there ofs and the hurdles of my other business; working out, tackling camping trips, canoeing and portages means I'm in control. Does that make sense? I feel so vulnerable in all the other areas of my life; where I'm living, what I'm doing, but to be able to take control of how I work out, to be able to start running and conquer something I thought I would NEVER be able to do (insert double lung transplant story here) makes me feel confident. Makes me feel like I have control over something in my life, when my life is just so full of unknowns right now.

IF IT WAS EASY EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT

I tried not to make this post be all negative. I hate being negative. But I also don't like not being honest. And I wanted to be honest with you in why I may have been off this summer in my Hattitude jewels endeavours. This summer is hard! The best advice I've heard this summer is "if it was easy, wouldn't everyone be doing it?" I've also never been the type to walk away from a good challenge. As Barney Stinson says "Challenge accepted."

What a Sweet Southern wedding photo shoot in Hamilton looks like! August 23 2017 8 Comments

Hi Friendlies, it's been awhile since I updated all you beautiful souls with some lovely wedding inspiration from some photo shoots I've been apart of this year.

Honestly being apart of photo shoot is such a perk to being in the wedding industry. I don't know how I get so lucky to be surrounded by such creative people. There's a BEAUTIFUL old town hall in Ancaster, near Hamilton where this shoot was photographed. Honestly I might consider getting re-married to have the wedding here. The floors, the windows, the curtains. Everything was amazing.

EMAIL marketing is king (7 reasons WHY!) June 01 2017

YOU OWN IT!

1. You OWN your list. You didn't pay to rent space from somewhere other social site, or pay for likes or followers. You actually physically have a copy of the spreadsheet file with all the emails and names. All the people who are love you! and want to hear more from you! No google, facebook, or Instagram can take that file away from you even if you get kicked off of their platforms or if they decide to stop showing you in the algorithm. You will always own your own email list.

IF SOCIAL MEDIA WAS WIPED OFF THE INTERWEB...

2. If social media disappeared you would survive and thrive. We've heard the buzz words, the algorithm is constantly changing, someone you know has been shadow banned. It's all true. It is happening. Not only that but Instagram and Facebook are creating imaging software that recognizes exactly what is in your photo and if you talk about something other then what's in your photo in your caption, they're going to rank it less in the algorithm. They're still sorting all of this out, and it's just going to get even CRAZIER down the line. So we have to prepare as small business owners and marketers. We need to start an email list. If we were kicked off from our accounts like so many of our friends, if you have an active, engaged email list you would survive and you would thrive. 

INSTAGRAM'S MID LIFE CRISIS

3. Instagram is having a mid life crisis... all we can do is watch. It's true. With shadow banning, new photo recognition technology, and low engagement because of the CONSTANTLY changing algorithm all we can do is pull up our socks, dust off our shoes and wait. But while we're waiting, we'll be forming a plan. We'll be actively using Instagram to grow our own email lists. 

PAY TO PLAY

3. Instagram will eventually adopt the pay to play, same as facebook. Facebook owns Instagram. Facebook pages are a thing of the past. Most people just push their Instagram images to post to their FB pages and hope they'll be 'seen' by a few of their followers. To get your image in front of your target market, you've got to have some $$$ behind you to back up those ads. Facebook once was a thriving network of referrals and what business dreams were made of, but now it's a pay to play platform and so many of us can't afford the entry fee. Email lists are yours. You won't ever have to keep paying someone else to get your message in front of your customers.

YOUR EXACT TARGET MARKET

4. Email marketing is sent to the EXACT target market, to the people who opted in to your list. I don't know about you, but I'm tired of shouting to the masses and hoping my image gets shown in the algorithm. With email lists, no more shouting to the masses and hoping it falls on the right target market. This is your target market. They've opted in to your list. They have said, I like what you're putting out, give me more!

6-8 TOUCH POINTS BEFORE A SALE HAPPENS

5. Email marketing is another way of building relationships with your customers which in turn will convert them into paying clients. They say it takes anywhere between 6-8 touch points before someone buys from you. This is another great way to make sure the RIGHT people are seeing your message. That the RIGHT people are getting to know you and that you're building relationships and trust and creating another touch point with the RIGHT people.

7. If you blog, post on facebook, share images on Instagram and are a product or service based business you can still have a wicked email campaign going. You just need to nurture it and run your campaigns correctly. Automation will be your best friend. Don't waste anymore time now knowing what to do, START now. You just can't afford not to have an email list in this changing digital age.

I STILL LOVE INSTAGRAM

Don't get me wrong, I am still a HUGE lover of Instagram, I think we've got 2 more years before it totally goes into the pay to play avenue that FB pages are now at. But I want to be prepared. I've spent 14 years building up my business so I want another avenue of marketing that I own. Email marketing is the way to go. I've been actively growing and engaging my email list for the last 8 years. I want you to be able to feel safe if social media disappeared that your business would still survive too.

REMEMBER WHEN INSTAGRAM WAS FUN?

Remember when Instagram was easy, fun and mindless. When we didn't plan our every move around which photo looks best in our feed, or when we didn't count the likes we got in an hour or in a day. When we didn't constantly look at how many new followers we had gained in a matter of weeks. Let's try to remember what Instagram is all about and start marketing our business based on that idea.

A FUN AND QUIRKY WAY TO SHARE PICTURES

Instagram is a fun and quirky way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures. That's it. No muss no fuss. Nothing else, nothing more, nothing less. As entrepreneurs and business owners, some of us have taken Instagram and morphed it into a selling machine. On this particular marketing platform, that is not what you should be doing. You need be sharing your life with your "friends" your followers. Creating relationships, building trust. You need to be engaging and commenting.

DOWN WITH THE ROBOTS

Instagram got rid of the bot programs and the automatic liking systems for a reason. It wasn't real. It wasn't what Instagram stood for.  it's so important to keep going back to the above mantra on what Instagram is. Honestly we need to keep this mantra alive when thinking about marketing on Instagram for our business! It's not and it can't be all SELL SELL SELL, or BUY BUY BUY. It just won't work. If this is your plan for marketing on Instagram, the algorithm and shadow banning will eat you up and spit you out. 

START BEING SOCIAL AGAIN

Instagram wasn't even built for the purpose of selling your products so you have to start marketing on the app the it was built for. If you don't your followers eventually will lose interest if no relationship or no trust is built between you and them. So start commenting, start being social, start genuinely liking images and going through the hashtags you're using and leave some love on them!

DON'T DINE AND DASH WITH YOUR PHOTOS

Be present on the social app. Don't dine and dash. AKA where you throw up a photo and think you're done on the app and just close it out expecting the likes, the enquiries and the sales to come your way. It doesn't work like that. By being more active on your account, your followers will appreciate it, you'll gain new followers, and you'll start building those relationships and that trust that is so sacred between customer and merchant.

THEY'LL EVENTUALLY FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU

People will eventually fall in love with you and your products and your business and that's when they'll buy from you. Only once they know you through a fun and quirky way of sharing your life through a series of pictures.

MAMA's day just got a little better May 29 2017

BEEN TRAVELLING

I hope you're having a wonderful week. I've been travelling. I took a week off to go with two of my girlfriends to Prince Edward County. It was so nice to have a break before wedding season starts. I was so excited last week to open up my inbox to these beautiful photos by Rosewood weddings. Stef came and was so lovely and kind to shoot the first of the two mother's day workshops.

MOTHER'S DAY WORKSHOP FUN

Everyone had such a great time. The sweets by Crumb and berry were divine. She really makes the best sweets and cakes and tarts! The necklaces and bracelets and earrings that were designed were so much fun to see come to life after everyone chose some vintage pieces to mix and match from the bins to create their designs.

TWO WORKSHOPS BACK TO BACK

I was lucky enough to host two workshops back to back which were full classes. Everyone brought their mom, sister in law or grandmother to design their necklaces with. After digging through the treasure bins, learning a tutorial and basic design 101 from me, they set out designing and trying to create a piece they would love! I did the hard part after they had left and built the pieces for them to pick up and enjoy. They got to do the fun designing part!

What is shadow banning on Instagram? April 03 2017 23 Comments

SHADOW BANNING IS REAL AND IT SUCKS

Shadow banning is happening all across Instagram. Ever since Instagram started rolling out new algorithms last year, another change was rolled out the first week of February 2017 we've seen our engagement and reach drop significantly and Instagram started doing some strange things.

WHAT IS SHADOW BANNING

Shadow banning is when you post an image to Instagram and only you (the poster) and your followers can see the image under those hashtags. If a new user (who isn't following you) were to look at that hashtag your image would not appear under that hashtag, hence you've been shadow banned. A lot of articles have been popping up about it and it's still kind of unknown a lot about what exactly causes it and who is being targeted. Even the huffington post posted an article about shadow banning the other day. The community is hoping with enough notice Instagram will do something about it....but let's be real.. they probably won't. 

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT SHADOW BANNING

• don't copy and paste your hashtags
• switch up your hashtags for every post
• don't post too often 
• don't unfollow and follow people rapidly 
• don't buy followers
• change your password if it's been recently hacked
• if your account has been recently hacked stay off Instagram for a little while
• don't have more then one Instagram account coming from one IP address (i.e. having multiple accounts on your phone)

These are only theories about what you can do to prevent shadow banning and possible theories on why people were getting shadow banned in the first place. Again you could be doing all these things and be perfectly fine! You just never know what will trigger it. Hopefully we will have some more concrete information soon. 

HOW CAN I CHECK IT I'M SHADOW BANNED? 

You will have to log into an account (or create a new one) and not follow your main account, then search the hashtags you used on a previous post and see if those images are appearing. You have to make sure you are not following the account you want to check the images for. 

I AM SO THANKFUL TO HAVE AN ENGAGED EMAIL LIST

All I can say is I am so thankful that I have an active and engaged email list so I don't feel totally at a loss when thinking about what would happen if I got shadow banned. I always stress in my workshops to start an email marketing list and I offer email marketing workshops to help you think up your lead magnets (free downloads to grab email addresses), create opt in forms, create subject lines that get opens, and walk you through automation of mail chimp. As well as how to write an engaging email, what to say, how often to say it. If you've been on the fence about taking the workshop I highly suggest signing up!

WHAT TO WEAR FOR DATE NIGHT ON FRIDAY THIS SPRING?

I get it... looking through your wardrobe can be blah and boring and intimidating to find a new look to wear on your date night this Friday. Now that it's spring, we can start changing out our browns, tans, cranberries and mustards for some pale blues, pastels and light green coloured clothing! I'm so looking forward to spring colours.

IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO COME OUT OF WINTER HIBERNATION

Looking to come out of Winter hibernation this year in style? Hit up this spring with some beautiful tones to help warm up your skin. Coral, blue and greens! HALLELUJAH.

HERE'S THE TRICK TO THIS OUTFIT AND SOME INSPIRATION

Here's the trick to this outfit. Earrings (neutral,tassels are hot and of course they're Hattitude, you can grab them here), fun bracelet, similar colours as the skirt and top, pair a neutral jacket with it, and then place a 3rd pop of colour on your lips, your finger nails AND your purse. But that's it. No where else. Just adding that extra pop of colour in a few SMALL places can bring your outfit from boring to stylish in moments!  (note, VERY few people can pull off a pop of colour in their tights, and usually only if there is limited colour elsewhere, so don't match your purse to your tights! but a pop of coral shoe would be super cool)

Don't be A Robot, In a Human World (Navigating Your way on Instagram) March 16 2017

ROBOTS AND FAKE LIKES

Two of the biggest mistakes people are still making on instagram with their businesses are buying fake followers AND using robots to do the liking and the commenting for them. 

INSTAGRAM IS A SOCIAL PLATFORM SO DON'T TRY TO CHEAT

Instagram is a SOCIAL platform. We all know that to gain followers and convert them into customers, we need to be social on it. We need to be commenting, liking and engaging with the community. BUT some people are looking for a quick fix, for the easy way out. They're dumping and then they're done. AKA they're posting their photo and give themselves a pat on the back and they're all done. Marketing can be checked off for that day. Boy do they need a wake up call!

INSTAGRAM IS YOUR VIRTUAL HANDSHAKE AT A PARTY

You can't think of Instagram as dump and done. You have to be social, you have to engage you have to pretend that Instagram is your virtual handshake so you should be having conversations, leaving genuine comments on images you like, and following people you admire. The algorithm will see you doing this, and boost your photos up. Others will be looking at your feed, they'll start to follow you, it's a circle, but it starts with being social. 

SO DON'T BECOME A ROBOT TO CHEAT

Don't buy a program that will be a robot for you. Don't purchase something that is going to like other people's images for you and comment on other people's images. YES, it's super easy, I know because two years ago I did it. I tried a robot program for 2 weeks and quickly realized what a HUGE mistake it was.

SOMEONE POSTS ABOUT A LOSS AND THE ROBOT SAYS "COOL! (INSERT EMOJI)"

It looks SUPER weird and horrible if someone posts about the death in a family or a loss in the business and you see those pesky people who have bought robots to comment saying "that's great!" "Love this photo" meanwhile someone has poured their heart out to the community about the passing away of their dog... Come on, it's just insensitive and eventually it will back fire and you're account will suffer in the long run for it. So moral of the story, Don't be a robot in a human world. Be social. Join the community.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? 

Reply back to the robot comment, whoever's account it is with "Hey, let's try to be genuine and have a great community. stop using robots for artificial commenting #STOPtheBOTS." Maybe no one ever told them that hiring robots to comment for them is just NOT cool.

The Truth About Instagram Pods March 07 2017

THEY ONLY WORK FOR A FEW WEEKS.

So if you've been part of your pod for longer then a month, get out. Stop doing ALL that work for no return. 

That's the truth. They only work for a couple weeks and then you have to ditch em. We have to keep rotating the pods and more importantly the people IN the pods. Instagram's algorithm is REALLY smart, like REALLY, REALLY smart.

INSTAGRAM FIGURES OUT ITS THE SAME PEOPLE COMMENTING

Instagram after a few weeks starts to figure that it's the same people commenting on your photos and will stop showing you in others' feed. This means people are less likely to find you and become new followers, and your current followers will also stop seeing your images in their feed, except for the 10-15 people in your pod. You'll be all over their feed! 

PODS ARE A LOT OF WORK SO MAKE IT WORTHWHILE

Do yourself a favour. Get a new pod with new people every few weeks to keep boosting your images in the algorithm. Instagram is sneakier so we need to keep coming up with new tactics to help us!

THE INSTAGRAM ALGORITHM IS KILLING US BUSINESS OWNERS

The Instagram algorithm is KILLING us business owners who rely on Instagram to build those relationships to convert your followers into customers.

BOOST YOUR IMAGES IN THE ALGORITHM

Ever heard of an Instagram pod? They're genius little hacks to help boost your images in the algorithm within Instagram. 

1. Gather a group of people. Preferably businesses who share the same target market (i.e. women under 40, athletic people or bridal industry people etc) 

2. Create a private message and invite everyone into that group

INTRODUCE YOURSELF IN THE POD

This will foster real relationships which will translate into real comments and people in your pod will feel more accountable to post and comment on time when they know you better. 

3. Post the rules, like following everyone, etc.

4. When you post an image to Instagram, post a NEW emoji in the group that others can be notified you posted a new image and they can go comment on the photo. 

4 OR MORE WORDS AS A COMMENT BOOST IMAGES IN THE ALGORITHM

Robots are killing the Instagram world. Don't use them. Just don't. No one likes a comment that says "That's awesome!" or "Such a great photo!" when it's on a post where you're talking about the death of a dog, or the loss of a job. Just be genuine. That's what this community is all about. 

ROBOTS ARE KILLING THE INSTAGRAM WORLD. 

5. Comment's are what beat the algorithm. Commenting on people's images AS SOON AS POSSIBLE with 4 or more words in the comments is best to help beat the algorithm.

6. Enjoy getting to know everyone in the pod.

1001 ways to be Romantic February 09 2017

Stumped on what to do for your girl (or guy) this weekend? Or maybe you're just a little tight for cash still since Christmas here's some unique and different and even some (none monetary) ways to be romantic this valentines day. Some of these ideas are from the cool book 1001 ways to be romantic by Gregory Godek.

1. Donate to a Charity She/He loves

• this shows you know what she (he) likes
• you're thoughtful
• you're thinking of others
• you're helping out those less fortunate
• she'll (he'll) love you even more for this! 

2. Pick up a bouquet of Flowers 

• seriously any girl loves flowers
• even if she says she doesn't care about flowers
• it just goes a long way that you made the extra effort

3. Do something really out of Character

• Are you always late? --- be on time
• Not creative? --- hand make her a card
• Forgetful? --- Write down something she mentions she loves in the next few days (her favourite food? chocolate bar?) and give it to her on V-day
• Routine is watching TV every night? --- Go out for Dinner instead
• Two left feet? --- Go out for a dance lesson

4. Act out different fantasies of meeting each other for the first time

• meet in a bar after work
• meet while grocery shopping
• meet in line, waiting at the bank
• meet at the movie theatres concession stand

5. Surprise them for lunch at their work

• show up with a packed lunch or take them to a restaurant down the street 
• they'll love that you went to the effort of coming to their work and surprising them

6. Watch old romantic movies

• pour some wine
• dub the sound and make up your own speaking lines to the characters
• snuggle under the blankets
• make some popcorn and put your favourite toppings on it (parmesan cheese, lime, butter?)

7. Put a heart sticker on your watch (or fit bit) on valentines day before you go to work

• every time you look at your watch and see the heart, text your loved one a reason why you love them, or that you're thinking of them

8. Ask each other quirky questions

• If you could be a comic strip character, who would you be? 
• If your name were to appear in the dictionary, how would you define yourself?
• What song title resonates with your personality?
• If you had three wishes what would they be?

THE FIRST TIME IN 6 YEARS WE DIDN'T WATCH THE SUPERBOWL

Did you watch the superbowl? Unfortunately our TV was being super weird so it was the first time in 6 years my husband and I haven't watched the superbowl! I know, it was really weird, especially since Tristan watches football religiously. Like I'm talking every Sunday, dog and him on the couch watching their games.

This Audie add with the Dad narrating gets me right in the feels! Oh my gosh, talk about stepping it up and making some big changes in the gender equality. Good for audi for trying to do something about it. 

CHASING DREAMS

I dunno what it is with the car commercials this year, but they are KILLING it. Honda made this commercial about chasing dreams and the amazing places they lead! I love this as an entrepreneur this one totally resonated with me.

Why I Don't Have 10K Followers on Instagram (AND I'm Happy About it!) January 31 2017 2 Comments

I'm okay with not having 10,000 followers, in fact I'm kind of happy about it for these 3 reasons in this article. 

WHAT THE K MEANS BESIDE SOMEONE'S INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS MEAN? 

Ever wondered what the K was beside someone's Instagram followers account? Have you ever looked at someone's feed and been like 'wow! They have 10,000 followers. How'd they do that?' Next time you look at someone's feed and see that they have a little K beside their numbers, check out their engagement. This is after all the ONLY thing that matters on Instagram.

• engaged followers = engaged customers
• # of likes divided by # of followers gives you engagement rate
• engagement rate between 2-4% for major brands is really good!
• brands that have 10,000 followers but only 100 likes... that's a 1% engagement rate
• advice for those accounts, CULL their followers 
• only have followers who are actually engaged with your product or service

If they have 10,000 followers but only 100 likes on average for each post... you have to ask yourself, is this engagement good? What about the other 9,800 people who are following them? 

3 REASONS WHY I'M OKAY WITH NOT HAVING A K BESIDE MY FOLLOWERS ON INSTAGRAM

Here's some reasons why I'm okay with not having a K beside my numbers, and why I purposely go through my Instagram followers every 6 months to get rid of "dead" beats... AKA people who just do follow for follow and who aren't even interested in what I've posted. That's actually hurting my account stopping others from seeing my posts who really want to! 

1. Algorithm Drag

- more followers that aren't engaged drag down your algorithm spot

2. Not Showing up

- you're not showing up in the people's feeds who are actually interested in you

3. Photos aren't getting the likes they deserve

- being dragged down in the algorithm means people aren't seeing you, means less likes, means even futher down the algorithm, it's a vicious cycle. 

TAKE A MINUTE RIGHT NOW AND FIND OUT YOUR ENGAGEMENT RATE

Find your worst liked photo and your best liked photos on Instagram in the past two weeks.

• find your worst amount of likes on a photo
• find your most amount of likes on a photo
• find the engagement rate for each photo (# likes / # of followers) 

What was your engagement rate for each photo? Do this with a few more images. Do you find a pattern between each of the best engaged photos? Was it the time of day you posted? Or was it the content? What are your followers diggin' that you're puttin' out? What sort of content is it? This is a great way to find out what your target market is vibing on your account!

I DIDN'T JUST GO TO SAN FRANCISCO FOR THE FLOWERS...

I went to learn how to be a better leader for all the creative entrepreneurs that are part of the Rising Tide Society. Huge thank you to Laura & Rachel Photography for being EVERYWHERE all retreat and taking all these amazing photos. 

IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE RISING TIDE SOCIETY IS...

If you don't know what the Rising Tide Society is, it's a movement that started in the United States with an idea in a coffee shop and now has over 350 local chapters across the world including New Zealand and Germany. To bring entrepreneurs out of their isolation and once a month meet with like minded creative entrepreneurs. It's a community that is truly making waves across the entrepreneurial landscape and changing the norm of how things were done before. 

OVER 150 LEADERS OF DIFFERENT LOCAL CHAPTERS ACROSS THE GLOBE GATHERED

Over 150 leaders of different local chapters across the globe spent two days in San Francisco. We discussed some really hard, soul wrenching stuff. Race, discrimination, bullies, loneliness, weaknesses, judgement, being authentic and staying true. Things got real. Really Real. I'm talking ugly crying real. 

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS AMAZING AND REWARDING BUT...

Entrepreneurship is amazing and rewarding and from the outside sometimes can seem like an absolute dream working for yourself. But in reality being an entrepreneur is tough. It's messy. It's lonely. It's hard. The Rising Tide Society was created out of these needs. It's a safe place for creatives to feel welcomed, loved and inspired. It's about sharing, evolving, inclusion, diversity, educating and above all else lifting each other up. There's a great quote by JFK that "A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats". We want to do this for other entrepreneurs. We want to break down the barriers to enter for entrepreneurs. 

Yes there was an 80's themed night and yes Jenn Kavanagh photography and I nailed it! 

THIS COMMUNITY IS MAKING SO MANY WAVES

This community is making so many waves and has so many positive impacts on so many of us. Natalie Franke fearlessly has embodied all that is the Rising Tide Society and has partnered with honeybook a start up tech company in San Francisco to help us keep everything free in the RTS community. She believes so much in what the RTS movement stands for she moved half way across the country so she could further the Rising Tide Society's goals and passions.

Instagram sales Low? Here's 14 Possible Reasons January 19 2017

1. Haven't created a relationship

Let's be real, Instagram is a fun and playful platform. If you don't build that trust, and start a relationship you're not going to get very far and you might as well market on a different platform.

Bottom line, people want to work with who they trust. Just like in person at a brick and mortar shop if you don't trust that sales person you're not going to buy from them. 

3. No curated and beautiful over all feed so people are not clicking the follow button 

You have 8 second to get people to click that follow button. Pretty feeds are A MUST

4. URL is not being utilized

It's the only clickable space on all of Instagram. Utilize it. 

5. profile isn't telling your target market who and what you do 

This is a no brainer, but SO many people under utilize this. Or they just don't know how. Trust me I was like that 18 months ago. I couldn't figure out how to make my profile work for me. 

6. No location on profile

How will people know where to find you or estimate shipping or book you for a wedding without knowing where you're based?

7. There isn't a brand presence

Who and what is behind your brand? NOT just your logo. You're so much more then just your logo. 

8. Not listing under your industry

Tell Instagram what you do so you can get found! 

9. Hashtags are not utilized for your industry

Use hashtags. They're your new best friend. They'll help you gain new followers and find like minded people! 

10. Not giving back to the community (you get what you put in)

Comment and like back! It's all about community on Instagram. That's what the whole platform was built on. 

11. No theme to Instagram feed

You gotta be more then just a few photos. What is the YOU behind your Instagram. 

12. Target market is getting lost and confused 

You're target market has got to be interested in what you're putting out. If they don't get it, you've already lost them. Be clear in your message. 

13. It's all sell, sell, sell and not enough courting future customers

Don't shoot to the masses and always be selling. No one likes that. Build trust. Build a relationship. Then sell. 

14. Dark photos that are not consistent

Light photos are proven to do better on Instagram. 

INSTAGRAM SALES LOW?

Instagram is not a selling, yelling to the masses about your product type of platform. It's about selling a lifestyle. 7 tips for mastering flat lays for Instagram January 03 2017

70% OF INSTAGRAM USERS HAVE SEARCHED FOR A BRAND ON INSTAGRAM

It is more important then ever for entrepreneurs to have our brand presence on Instagram be on point! Your voice, your brand, your colours, what makes your company special and your company's values needs to be spoken through each of the images and captions of your Instagram feed.

MORE USERS THEN EVER BEFORE ARE SPENDING MORE TIME ON MOBILE DEVICES THEN DESKTOPS

So making beautiful flat lays and creating awesome images for our social media accounts is a top priority. As a jewellery designer from Canada, I'm constantly doing flat lays for my social media accounts. Since it's all about capturing the perfect image of my one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces, I've spent a TON of time practising and mastering the flat. I hope these tips will help you capture photos of your best flat lays too. 

HERE'S 7 TIPS FOR MASTERING INSTAGRAM FLAT LAYS

1. WHITE BRISTLE BOARD

White bristol board will become your best friend. Unless you use a different colour for your Instagram feed other then white. Some people use dark images for their feed and they make it totally work for them (we go over the different feels and colour combos in the Instagram101 workshop). Usually light and bright photos are proven to get more likes on Instagram which in turn will help you pop up higher in the algorithm so more potential customers will see your images.

2. NATURAL LIGHT

Natural light is what it's all about. If you can get that natural light going even taking iphone photos look like professional SLR photos. For the first year of growing my account my ENTIRE page was iphone photos. You don't need a fancy camera to grow your brand and presence you just need some natural light. 

3. PROPS

Props are key to any Instagramers account. People love seeing consistency, which is why colours for your brand is so important (we also go over having a branding board in my Instagram 101 workshop). I always suggest to start collecting a prop box. (More on the prop box in the workshop)

4.LAYERS AND DEPTH

Layers and depth make an image come to life. When you're creating a flat lay it's important to ad layers and depth. This makes the image feel real and often people on Instagram like close up shots with depth to them. Try crumpling a t-shirt instead of laying it completely flat to give your photo some height depth, or stack a bunch of photos to cast shadows to again create some depth to your images. 

5. EYES GO LEFT TO RIGHT TELL A STORY

Eyes go left to right so choose the object you want to focus on and centre your props that go with your story. If you're showing a photo of your desk, lay the objects on your bristol board or on your desk space that would go with the story you're trying to tell. If you're showing people your agenda asking them to book appointments with you try styling with a canister of cute pencils (depth and height) with your computer and a coffee mug or a pair of glasses. Make the most important object (the planner), what you're talking about in your caption the first thing they focus on, then as they head left to right with their eyes, the next most important thing.... but sometimes it's okay just to make things look pretty. 

6. THREE OBJECTS

Three objects seems to be the magic number for me. I'm not saying this is the case every time, but for some reason if I have more then three things in my photo it's too busy my eyes don't know where to go. Start with your main focus, then slowly add in your props and objects until you find just the right amount. 

7. DON’T BE AFRAID TO CROP

Don't be afraid to crop your photo... aka leave things out of the image. You don't have to give EVERYTHING away. Your followers get the gist of it, this also helps point their eyes onto what the focus is in your image by not allowing them to get lost on every single object in your shot. 

8. BONUS TIP

TAKE DIRECTLY ABOVE the flat lay you've created. Flat lays look best when the photo is taken directly above. 

WE ONLY HAVE AN 8 SECONDS ATTENTION SPAN 

In my generation we have an 8 second attention span. My nephew's generation (he's 15) only has a 6 second attention span. That means we only have 8 seconds to get them to click follow or engage them to click to your website from your Instagram account. That is NOT very long. That's a lot of pressure on those first few images and the over all look and feel of your Instagram feed. It's important that your captions, your first 9 photos, your branding colours, your hashtags, your feed, your story telling, your community are all working for you and that you know how to market effectively on Instagram.

WHAT SHOULD YOUR FIRST NINE PHOTOS OF YOUR INSTAGRAM FEED INCLUDE?

I get asked this a lot in my Instagram 101 workshops. So I thought I'd do a blog post on what I think every entrepreneur and business should have in the first 9 photos of their Instagram feed (sometimes I push this to 12 photos). 

1. A selfie

2. Lifestyle Image

3. Product Image or Service Image

4. Behind The Scenes Image

5. Something Your Target Market Enjoys

1.  A SELFIE

I know, I know. I always hear groans when I say this in my workshop. BUT it's so true. Every time I ask in the course what gets the most likes on your Instagram feed, everyone always says photos of themselves. 

WHY DOES A SELFIE GET THE MOST LIKES?

Humans are curious by nature. We want to see the person behind the lens. We want to see the person behind the creations or the person behind the service. I'm not going to book a photographer for my wedding if I don't know what they look like, or if I can't get a feeling for who they are. With so many different competitors out there for EVERY industry we all need to find our unique voice and we need to make sure our customers can hear it and visualize who is talking. This will make them want to buy from us, or book our services. This is our sales platform. So make sure to give your sales platform a face. If you have a team in your business, instead of a solopreneur, give your team a face. Introduce them to the Instagram world. After all, Instagram by definition is "a fun and quirky way to share our lives through a series of photos with our friends". What does this mean? You want to show yourself to your "friends", your followers on your Instagram. You want to build that trust and let them hear your voice. Having a photo of yourself in your top 9 images is one of the most important aspects.

2. LIFESTYLE IMAGE

Give your audience a peek into your life. Again humans are curious by nature. Let them into what book you're reading in your down time, what your cat looks like, or what your cooking for dinner that night. I know, I know people often think well who cares about that? But again, you are building a relationship with your friends and followers. You are building trust and showing them you're a real person and you'd be a great person to work with. These lifestyle images also help spark conversation. Again this builds trust, shows your personality and helps beat the new algorithm. We talk about the algorithm in the workshop and even set up Instagram pods for those interested.  

3. PRODUCT IMAGE OR SERVICE IMAGE

Of course you have to have a few product images sprinkled within your top 9 photos. If you're a hair dresser, make sure you have some up dos, a florist, make sure you have a bouquet, wedding photographer make sure you have a professional photograph of a wedding, jewellery maker, make sure you show your latest jewellery product. Sometimes I would get so carried away with building trust and showing behind the scenes I would forget to post products! So this is HUGE. Don't forget to post what you're trying to sell! 

4. BEHIND THE SCENES IMAGE

This is so important. A lot of entrepreneurs forget to show their grass roots. I can't stress this enough, humans are super curious by nature. We love knowing how things are made, or done, or little tricks. Humans love the inner workings of knowing how something happened. Again the whole curious by nature thing. Showing behind the scenes (Instagram stories is a great resource for this, and yes we go over Insta stories and how to use them properly for your business in the workshop) is a great way to get people invested in your product or service. 

5. SOMETHING YOUR TARGET MARKET ENJOYS

This is something that's a little more hard to always keep in your top 9 photos. Find something that your target market (who you're specifically trying to sell to) also enjoys doing. This keeps them interested and makes your feed not all "sell sell sell". One of the biggest mistakes I think entrepreneurs and businesses make is trying to sell ALL the time on Instagram. You need to woo people, show them your brand, your style, your voice. Build a relationship and trust with your customers and then start to sell to them. Let them know you're not always trying to sell them to. Offer to give them advice, tell them interesting things you think they would enjoy. Don't always be that business or company who is sell, sell, sell.

WE CUT AND DECORATED OUR CHRISTMAS TREE December 18 2016

TRISTAN AND I CUT OUR CHRISTMAS TREE TODAY

Tristan and I went and got our Christmas tree from Hockley Valley Tree Farm in Caledon today. It was a little chilly (-8) compared to yesterday which was a lovely 0 degrees. Tristan and I usually get our tree at the beginning of December but this year December just got away from us. Can anyone else relate to this? The end to 2016 is just whizzing by and I want to hold on to it for as long as I can. The memories and moments out of this year were some of the best of my life.
